Storms Surge East into Central PA, Northern MD with Damaging Winds
A line of severe thunderstorms is pushing eastward from Ohio into western and central Pennsylvania, as well as northern and western Maryland, this afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) highlights an 80% chance of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issuance soon to cover the growing risk.
Storms already packing gusts up to 66 mph in Ohio are expected to intensify with ongoing heating. Surface temperatures in the 80s are fueling around 1000-1500 J/kg of MLCAPE, combined with strengthening upper-level winds and steep low-level lapse rates. This setup favors robust thunderstorm development and downward mixing of high momentum air, leading to damaging wind gusts of 55-70 mph as the most probable peak.
Hail up to 1.75 inches and isolated tornadoes with winds to 90 mph are also possible, though winds pose the primary concern. The threat window runs through late afternoon (valid until around 2 PM EDT).
This builds on earlier activity, with storms eyeing areas from Pittsburgh eastward into central PA and north MD near the panhandle. Attention WFOs include PBZ, CTP, LWX, and others.
Stay prepared: Monitor local NWS updates, have multiple alert sources, secure outdoor items, and seek shelter if storms approach. Severe weather can change quickly—safety first.
