Central High Plains Storms Gear Up for 80 MPH Winds, Large Hail

Scattered thunderstorms are firing over the high terrain from central Colorado into southeastern Wyoming, setting the stage for severe weather across portions of the central High Plains.

The Storm Prediction Center's Mesoscale Discussion 1542 highlights a growing risk for severe wind gusts up to 65-80 mph, with a couple of significant gusts possible. Isolated large hail around 1-1.75 inches could also mix in, especially with any discrete storms. High-based storms, fueled by heating, upslope flow, and a weak mid-level impulse, will interact with richer moisture eastward, promoting intensification.

Steep low-level lapse rates and a deep, well-mixed boundary layer favor strong downdrafts and efficient wind transport to the surface. Expect upscale growth into linear clusters by evening, ramping up the wind threat. Better shear farther north boosts hail odds there.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is 80% likely within the next 1-2 hours to cover NE, KS, CO, and WY zones. Peak threats roll through this afternoon into evening.

Stay prepared: Monitor radar and local NWS updates, secure outdoor items, and have a severe weather plan ready if you're in the path.
