Mid South Afternoon Storms Charge Up for 80 MPH Gusts

Storms are firing up across portions of the Mid South this afternoon, primed for scattered damaging wind gusts reaching 65-80 mph and isolated large hail up to 1.75 inches.

The setup features a cold front slicing through southern Missouri and Kansas, paired with a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) over southeastern Kansas. A surface confluence zone in northern Arkansas is sparking cumulus development, all amid moderate instability. As the MCV and front push southeast, expect convection to intensify into linear clusters, boosted by 40-50 kt mid-level flow and steep lapse rates.

SPC's Mesoscale Discussion 2082 flags this as a watch-likely scenario (80% probability) through around 6 PM CDT, covering parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Peak threats include severe straight-line winds—potentially significant blasts—and some quarter- to golf ball-sized hail.
