Mid-Atlantic Braces for 80 MPH Gusts as Storms Intensify; IL-IN Cluster Follows

July 4, 2026 – Fireworks might light up the sky tonight, but severe thunderstorms could steal the show across the eastern U.S. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued two Mesoscale Discussions (MDs) highlighting rapid severe risks: one with a 95% chance of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch across much of Virginia, Maryland, and eastern West Virginia, and another with 60% odds for north-central Illinois into Indiana.

What’s a Mesoscale Discussion?

For the public, an MD is SPC's heads-up that small-scale weather features are brewing severe storms fast – often the step before a watch. Think of it as "stay tuned, this could get serious soon."

Mid-Atlantic: Watches Likely, Winds Primary Threat

Scattered storms are bubbling up along West Virginia's high terrain and southwestern Virginia right now, fueled by intense afternoon heating and lift from the mountains. A juicy air mass (dewpoints in the upper 60s to low 70s) under steep lapse rates is supercharging these into scattered to numerous thunderers pushing east into central/eastern VA and MD through evening.

Peak hazards: Damaging wind gusts 65-80 mph from cells and clusters – weak shear limits big organization, but the unstable setup screams gusts. Hail up to 1.25 inches possible too. Expect a watch soon covering this zone.

Midwest: IL-IN Storms Gaining Steam

Meanwhile, a cluster is firing after 1 PM CDT over central/north-central Illinois, eyeing Indiana later. A low-pressure feature and mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) from Iowa, plus convergence and southerly flow, are sparking storms amid heating (PWATs over 1.75 inches). They'll track east-southeast, potentially nearing Indianapolis early evening.

Peak hazards: Wind gusts 55-70 mph as the main punch, with hail to 1.25 inches. Cooler air nearby tempers things near Chicago, but destabilization wins out south.

Both areas share a wind-focused threat this holiday afternoon/evening – stay alert!

Stay Prepared

Have a severe weather plan: monitor radar via apps like RadarScope or NOAA Weather Radio, secure outdoors items, and know your safe spot. If storms hit, heed local warnings. Safe July 4th!
