Northeast Thunderstorms Surge East with Damaging Winds, Tornado Potential
A line of low-topped thunderstorms is pushing eastward across portions of the Northeast this morning, gaining strength from rising dew points and filtered heating. The Storm Prediction Center's Mesoscale Discussion 1181 highlights increasing potential for damaging winds and even a couple of tornadoes as these storms evolve into the early afternoon.
Strong southerly flow is boosting instability, with MLCAPE forecast around 1000 J/kg. Combined with robust mid-level winds and a potent low-level jet, shear profiles favor wind gusts of 55-70 mph—the most probable peak. Low-level shear also supports brief tornado spin-ups, rated at 85-110 mph (EF1-EF2 intensity).
The threat spans parts of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania. A severe thunderstorm watch appears likely within the hour, valid through around 11 AM EDT, to cover this setup.
This comes amid broader severe patterns earlier in the Midwest and Appalachians, but Northeast residents should monitor closely as storms intensify under prominent cloud cover.
