Tornado Risk Rises with Afternoon Storms in Ozarks, ArkLaTex — SevereWX

Scattered thunderstorms are ramping up this afternoon across portions of the Ozarks and ArkLaTex regions, fueled by intense heating and a very moist air mass. The Storm Prediction Center highlights the potential for a couple of tornadoes — most likely EF1 to low-end EF2 strength (85-110 mph) — along with isolated damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.

A mid-level vortex near Tulsa is steering stronger winds aloft into the area, enlarging low-level wind patterns favorable for rotating supercells, especially in southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. Backed surface winds there boost spin potential further. Plentiful Gulf moisture could also trigger heavy, water-laden downbursts.

Storms are already increasing ahead of this feature, and SPC forecasters are watching closely for a targeted Tornado Watch (40% chance) in parts of the discussion area, valid through about 4 PM CDT.

Affected spots include areas around Springfield, MO; Fayetteville, AR; and into eastern Oklahoma and northeast Texas. Keep an eye on radar as coverage grows.
