Sangre de Cristo Storms Cluster for 80 MPH Winds into Panhandles, SW Kansas
Thunderstorms sparking along the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Raton Mesa are expected to upscale into clusters late afternoon into evening, bringing severe wind gusts up to 70-80 mph to far northeast New Mexico, the Oklahoma Panhandle, and southwest Kansas.
SPC Mesoscale Discussion 1989 highlights a 60% chance of a new severe thunderstorm watch east and southeast of the ongoing Watch 584 over southeast Colorado. Steep low-level lapse rates and MLCAPE of 1500-2500 J/kg are fueling destabilization north of a warm front stretching from southwest Kansas into the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles.
Storms will push east into the High Plains, with potential merging of activity from the mountains and along the surface boundary. CAM models show clusters developing, favoring damaging straight-line winds as the main hazard, alongside 1-1.75 inch hail. Peak gusts could hit 65-80 mph.
This setup builds on diurnal heating, with trends under close watch for watch issuance through 7 PM CDT.
Areas at Risk: Far NE NM (PUB/ABQ), OK Panhandle (OUN/AMA), SW KS (DDC).
Check SPC MD graphics for latest updates. Residents should monitor radar and NWS alerts, secure outdoor items, and shelter indoors away from windows if storms approach.
