South Carolina Storms Cluster for 55-70 MPH Damaging Gusts
Scattered thunderstorms are firing across much of South Carolina, southern North Carolina, and far eastern Georgia this afternoon, with a growing risk of damaging wind gusts up to 55-70 mph.
The Storm Prediction Center's Mesoscale Discussion 1585 highlights convection aided by a remnant mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) and westerly mid-level flow. These storms are expected to organize into clusters moving east-southeast toward the Atlantic Coast through evening.
Ahead of the storms, temperatures in the low 90s and dewpoints in the low-to-mid 70s are fueling 2000-2500+ J/kg MLCAPE. Steep low-level lapse rates, high precipitable water (2+ inches), and stronger mid-level winds will support gusty downdrafts, especially in central South Carolina.
Peak winds are most probable at 55-70 mph, with the highest odds for severe gusts (45-55 mph common, locally stronger) where conditions overlap best. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is 60% likely within the next 1-2 hours.
Affected Areas: Primarily the Carolina Piedmont and Coastal Plain, from near Columbia and Charleston eastward.
Stay weather-aware this evening as storms approach populated areas. Monitor updates from SPC and local NWS offices (CAE, CHS, GSP, ILM, RAH, FFC).
Preparedness: Secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and have a severe weather plan ready. Check radar frequently and heed warnings.
