SE Colorado, NE New Mexico Storms Surge into TX Panhandle with 70 MPH Gusts — SevereWX

Storms are firing up along Colorado's Front Range and into northeast New Mexico, poised to spread southeast into the Texas Panhandle through the evening hours.

The Storm Prediction Center highlights a 60% chance of a severe thunderstorm watch as strong heating combines with 50s F dewpoints and 30-35 kt effective shear. Steep lapse rates favor damaging wind gusts as the primary threat, with the most probable peaks at 55-70 mph. Isolated hail up to 1.75 inches is also possible, though less widespread.

Scattered cells and clusters are already developing, expected to increase in coverage. Some may produce brief hail cores, but downdraft potential looks highest given the steep boundary layer lapse rates. Storms reaching the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles could tap into 35 kt southerly winds at 850 mb for better organization.

Areas at risk include southeast Colorado (PUB), northeast New Mexico (ABQ), the Texas Panhandle (AMA), and possibly the Oklahoma Panhandle (DDC/GLD). Peak threats unfold between 4 PM and 9 PM Moderate.

Most probable peak wind gusts: 55-70 mph

Most probable peak hail size: 1.00-1.75 inches

Monitor radar closely and have a severe weather safety plan ready—seek shelter if storms approach with rotation or intensifying winds.
