As of 3 PM CDT, visible satellite imagery shows deepening cumulus and initial showers along the front from southern Middle Tennessee into northern Alabama and Mississippi. Despite modest synoptic support south of a Midwest upper low, diurnal heating is eroding weak inhibition, sparking storm development near convective temperatures.
Rich low-level moisture—dewpoints in the mid-to-upper 70s°F—combined with very warm temperatures yields hefty MLCAPE of 2000-3000 J/kg. Poor mid-level lapse rates are offset by this large buoyancy, while 20-30 kt of effective shear aids storm organization into lines and clusters.
The main hazards: damaging wind gusts of 55-70 mph from high PWATs and downdraft water loading, plus a low-end tornado risk up to 90 mph (EF2) in the most robust clusters over north-central Alabama, spreading into northwest Georgia and southeast Tennessee.
CAM guidance supports bands of storms along the front, with severe potential peaking this evening. Forecasters Lyons and Mosier note a watch is possible given the gust threat.
