Bowing Storm Cluster Charges East into Kansas City Vicinity Overnight
A robust bowing complex, fresh off significant wind damage across central Kansas, is barreling east-southeastward into eastern Kansas and western Missouri through the overnight hours.
This intense mesoscale convective system (MCS) features a history of measured severe gusts and radar-confirmed high velocities. Abundant buoyancy (3000-4000 J/kg MUCAPE) over eastern KS, though weakening into western MO, combined with strong low-level shear, will sustain the threat for damaging straight-line winds and a couple of QLCS tornadoes.
SPC's Mesoscale Discussion 1041 highlights peak threats including:
- Winds: 75-90 mph gusts
- Tornadoes: 85-110 mph (EF1-EF2 intensity)
- Hail: 1.00-1.75 inches
The system should hold together for several hours despite eventual weakening from nocturnal cooling and lower instability near the KS/MO border. A new tornado watch is 95% likely downstream from current WW290, covering the discussed areas from roughly 4 AM to 5:30 AM CDT Tuesday.
Populated spots near Emporia, Topeka, Lawrence, and the Kansas City metro could see impacts. Radar shows a potent rear-inflow jet fueling the bow echo's strength.
Stay prepared: Keep weather apps handy, have a safe room ready, and heed any warnings overnight. Power outages and travel disruptions possible with these gusty storms.
