Central Kentucky Damaging Winds Intensify with SPC Watch Imminent — SevereWX

Storms surging from far southern Indiana and southwestern Ohio are set to deliver a damaging wind punch to central and eastern Kentucky over the next couple of hours.

The Storm Prediction Center's Mesoscale Discussion 1774 highlights a broken band of thunderstorms packing a history of gusty winds, now barreling into an unstable environment primed for intensification. With MLCAPE values of 2000-4000 J/kg and over 40 knots of effective shear, these storms could easily whip up 55-70 mph gusts through sunset.

Far southern Indiana into central Kentucky (around Lexington) and eastern Kentucky bear the brunt, with the line expected to propagate southward. SPC forecasters peg the odds of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch at 80%, likely issuing within the hour to cover the escalating threat.

This setup stems from diurnal heating fueling the downstream airmass, turning a routine outflow boundary into a gusty menace. No widespread hail or tornado concerns noted, but straight-line winds remain the primary hazard capable of downing trees, power lines, and causing outages.
