Thunderstorms are firing across central South Dakota amid rising mid-level ascent and clearing skies behind morning clouds. Temperatures in the 80s F combined with dewpoints in the upper 60s to 70s F have sparked MLCAPE of 1000-2000 J/kg, fueling supercell development.

Deep-layer shear of 20-30 knots and veering winds favor organized storms capable of large hail up to 1.25 inches and damaging gusts of 55-70 mph. A low-end tornado risk exists, with most probable peak intensity around 90 mph.

As the afternoon progresses, storms may cluster, heightening damaging wind threats into the evening across northern Nebraska. SPC sees an 80% chance of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch to cover these hazards.
