The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued two Mesoscale Discussions (MDs) signaling an 80% chance of watches in both regions, where supercells could bring damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.

Northern Threat: Mid-Atlantic Hotspot

In southern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, ongoing showers and thunderstorms are intensifying amid strengthening winds aloft (30-45 knots shear). Filtered sunshine in spots has boosted instability, with temps in the upper 70s to 80s. As the front nears, expect clusters to fire up, primarily packing 55-70 mph wind gusts. A few transient supercells may spin up brief tornadoes (up to 90 mph) and 1.25-inch hail.

Southern Threat: Appalachian Powerhouse

Farther southwest, eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and western North Carolina face a bigger supercell risk. Storms here already show rotation, with more developing near the front. Killer shear (45-55 knots deep layer, plus a 25-30 knot low-level jet) will curve hodographs for tornado potential, alongside large hail and damaging winds. Storm modes may mix supercells with bowing segments, keeping threats high through late afternoon.
