Extreme CAPE Ignites Severe Storm Clusters Over Lake Michigan Metro

Storms are rapidly organizing in a powder keg of instability around Lake Michigan, setting the stage for damaging wind swaths and isolated large hail through early afternoon.

The SPC's latest Mesoscale Discussion (1760) highlights two key development zones: a strengthening bow echo pushing southeast from northeast Wisconsin, and fresh convection bubbling up from Green Bay across central Lake Michigan. Further south, elevated storms and towering cumulus are firing in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois within a corridor of extreme buoyancy.

This volatile setup features 2000-4000 J/kg MLCAPE, very steep midlevel lapse rates, and 50+ kt deep-layer shear—prime ingredients for severe escalation. Multiple storm clusters could merge, delivering the biggest punch from eastern Wisconsin through northeast Illinois, southern/central Lake Michigan, southwest Lower Michigan, and northeast Indiana.

Expect peak threats of 65-80 mph wind gusts capable of widespread damage, 1-1.75 inch hail, and isolated tornadoes up to 90 mph. Timing remains tricky, but a severe thunderstorm watch is 60% likely within the next few hours.
