Montana-Wyoming Storms Surge with 70 MPH Winds into Dakotas — SevereWX

Thunderstorms are ramping up across the high terrain in eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming, with activity spreading eastward into the western Dakotas this afternoon and evening.

The Storm Prediction Center highlights a setup ripe for one or more clusters of damaging winds, fueled by hot temperatures in the upper 90s to 100s°F, dew points in the 50s-60s, and eroding MLCIN. Steep lapse rates near 7-8°C/km and moderate instability support gusts of 55-70 mph, alongside hail up to 1.25 inches.

A cluster already produced 57 mph gusts in eastern North Dakota, and guidance points to more organization as storms push east. SPC rates watch issuance odds at 60% for the next few hours.

Residents in eastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming, and western Dakotas (including parts of North and South Dakota) should monitor radar closely as these storms evolve.
