MCV Ignites Ohio Storms for 70 MPH Winds into Pennsylvania — SevereWX

Clusters of thunderstorms lingering over northwest to west-central Ohio this morning are poised to explode into a severe threat by early afternoon. Fueled by an approaching mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) from southeast Michigan, these storms will benefit from stronger daytime heating in a less cloudy corridor downstream.

Boundary-layer dew points in the low to mid-70s°F are mixing with that heating to boost MLCAPE to 1500-2500+ J/kg, eroding convective inhibition and sharpening storm intensity from central and eastern Ohio into western Pennsylvania and northwest West Virginia.

The Indianapolis VWP reveals 30-40 kt westerly winds in the 1-5 km layer, setting up potential for cold pool organization and damaging downdraft gusts of 55-70 mph—the main hazard. Low-level shear is veered and limited, so tornado risk stays low (possible brief spin-up to 90 mph), but wind will dominate.
