SPC Mesoscale Discussion Flags Emerging Severe Risk
The Storm Prediction Center has issued Mesoscale Discussion 1816, highlighting scattered thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front and surface cyclone across portions of southern Indiana, Ohio, central Kentucky, and middle Tennessee this afternoon.
Storms are intensifying along a broad frontal zone in the lower Ohio Valley, fueled by diffuse heating in a very moist air mass with surface temps in the upper 70s to low 80s°F. MLCAPE is climbing to 1000-2000 J/kg, supporting storm coverage increases from Indiana southward into Kentucky, Ohio, and middle Tennessee.
Expect a mix of clustered multicells and transient supercells, thanks to 30-35 kt effective shear and modest low-level hodographs. High PWATs could load downdrafts for damaging gusts of 55-70 mph, particularly in clustering cells.
Tornado potential is conditional but notable: 0-500m SRH of 75-150 m²/s² and backed low-level flow near the Ohio River in southern IN, northern KY, and southwest OH could spin up a couple twisters rated 85-110 mph.
A watch issuance is 40% likely, though lingering clouds and nebulous forcing add uncertainty on peak threats and timing.
