Rockies Thunder Roars Across High Plains: 1.75-Inch Hail, 80 MPH Winds Erupt from WY to Panhandles
Urgent storm surge underway -- Thunderstorms exploding out of the central Rockies are charging into the eastern Wyoming, northeast Colorado, southwest South Dakota, and Nebraska Panhandle this afternoon, with a fast-expanding threat barreling southeast into southwest Kansas, the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles, and far northeast New Mexico through evening.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) just issued two significant Mesoscale Discussions (MDs) -- quick-hit alerts for fast-evolving severe weather on a regional scale. For the general public, an MD means storms are ramping up quickly in a focused area, with a 60% chance of severe thunderstorm watches soon. Watches would cover bigger zones for large hail, damaging winds, or tornadoes, urging folks to stay tuned.
Western flank (MD 1988): Storms firing over the Colorado Front Range and northeast Wyoming are pushing into the High Plains amid 1000-1500 J/kg of instability, steep lapse rates, and 30-40 kt shear. Expect multicell clusters and supercells dropping 1-1.75-inch hail initially, evolving into wind-heavy beasts with 55-70 mph gusts by evening.
Eastern push (MD 1989): Along the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Raton Mesa, new storms are bubbling up a warm front into southwest Kansas and the panhandles. Here, 1500-2500 J/kg CAPE supercharges the setup for clusters merging southeast, slamming 70-80 mph wind gusts as the main punch -- think downbursts ripping across open plains.
Models show these regimes linking up over southwest Kansas tonight, amplifying the severe blitz. Recent Watch 584 already tags southeast Colorado for hail and winds; more watches loom east/southeast.
Stay prepared: Check radar often, secure outdoors, seek shelter if storms near. Have a severe weather plan -- low spot away from windows -- and download a weather app for alerts. High Plains, don't get caught off-guard!
