Thunderstorms are ramping up across much of the western Dakotas, primed for severe impacts through late afternoon.

The Storm Prediction Center's latest Mesoscale Discussion (1048) highlights intensifying storm development by 4-6 PM CDT as a capping layer erodes under mid-level cooling. Low-level heating has steepened lapse rates, fueling CAPE values of 1000-2000 J/kg despite modest moisture. Expect initial storms to pack large hail up to 3.5 inches and strong downbursts.

By evening, convection should grow upscale, spreading northeastward with cold pools drawing in moister air from the Missouri Valley. This sets the stage for widespread 65-80 mph wind gusts, with a low-end tornado risk (85-110 mph) along the southern flank amid a 30+ kt low-level jet.

A watch issuance looks highly likely (80% probability) within the next few hours, covering key areas served by WFOs in Aberdeen, Bismarck, and Rapid City. SPC pegs peak threats at baseball-sized hail, severe straight-line winds, and EF1-EF2 tornadoes.

This builds on recent Plains activity, but today's focus shifts firmly to the western Dakotas for a potent severe bout.
