Evening Supercell Setup Across Eastern Kansas-Western Missouri

A stubborn stationary frontal zone stretching from northern Oklahoma into southeast Kansas is setting the stage for strong to severe thunderstorms late this evening. North of the boundary, cool and very moist air clashes with hotter, well-mixed conditions to the south, creating a volatile environment primed for storm development.

Diffuse baroclinic zones extend into western and northern Missouri, bolstered by outflow from earlier weak convection and differential heating. Despite some lingering convective inhibition, MLCAPE values of 1000-2000 J/kg combined with 35-45 kt of effective shear offer support for organized storms if they can root themselves.

One storm is already intensifying east of Wichita, with showers strengthening farther north in east-central Kansas. Strengthening low-level warm advection and a low-amplitude midlevel shortwave trough approaching from western Kansas should boost coverage, pushing storms eastward into western Missouri.

Key Threats:

Initial cells in the warm-advection zone could take on supercellular traits before clustering near the MO border. Modest lapse rates may cap upside, and storms could elevate later, but any organization heightens wind risks. SPC notes a 40% chance of watch issuance if trends hold.

This setup valid through 12Z (midnight CDT, August 6), mainly 10 PM-12 AM CDT. Monitor radar closely around Wichita eastward to Kansas City.
