MCS Pushes into Western Minnesota with 80 MPH Wind Risk, Watch Issuance Likely — SevereWX

A robust mesoscale convective system (MCS), fueled by a cold pool, is marching southeast from central and southeastern North Dakota toward far northeast South Dakota and western Minnesota this evening.

The Storm Prediction Center highlights prime conditions ahead of the line: over 2000 J/kg of MLCAPE and 40-50 kt shear aligned for storm organization. While some convective inhibition (CINH) lingers downstream, if the MCS holds together, it could deliver the primary threat of severe wind gusts peaking at 65-80 mph. A couple of tornadoes or hail up to 1.75 inches can't be ruled out either.

SPC's Mesoscale Discussion 1726 pegs watch issuance odds at 60% through around 7 PM CDT Friday. This builds on Severe Thunderstorm Watch 512, with the system potentially spilling into far west-central Minnesota.

Residents in the Red River Valley and nearby areas should monitor radar closely as storms approach. Power outages, downed trees, and difficult travel are possible if gusts hit forecast peaks.
