Moist Air Mass Unleashes Gusty Thunderstorms, Tornado Potential in Ohio-Tennessee Valleys — SevereWX
Thunderstorms are firing up this afternoon across the lower Ohio Valley, where a moist surface layer combined with diffuse heating is fueling a severe risk.
SPC's Mesoscale Discussion 1816 highlights scattered storms developing ahead of a cold front and occluded cyclone from portions of southern Indiana and Ohio, into central Kentucky and middle Tennessee. Despite lingering clouds keeping surface temps in the upper 70s to low 80s°F, MLCAPE is climbing to 1000-2000 J/kg amid weak ascent from an upper low.
A stronger westerly flow aloft provides 30-35 kt effective shear, supporting clusters of multicells and possible transient supercells. High PWATs in the very moist air mass will load downdrafts with water, boosting potential for damaging gusts up to 55-70 mph, especially where storms cluster.
Tornado odds look conditional but real: low-level SRH of 75-150 m²/s² and backed flow along parts of the Ohio River in southern IN, northern KY, and southwest OH could spin up a couple twisters with any stronger cells. SPC tags peak tornado intensity at 85-110 mph (EF1-EF2).
Watch issuance sits at 40% probability through 4 PM CDT, given nebulous forcing and low confidence on peak threats. Storm coverage should ramp up from IN southward through KY, OH, and middle TN.
