Alabama Cold Front Fires Up Gusty Thunderstorms, Tornado Potential — SevereWX

SPC Mesoscale Discussion 1818 flags a growing severe risk as scattered thunderstorms develop along a trailing cold front this late afternoon into evening.

The setup features a surface trough from southern Middle Tennessee into northern Alabama and Mississippi. Despite modest synoptic support south of a Midwest upper low, daytime heating is eroding weak inhibition, sparking storm initiation around 4-6 PM CDT.

Forecast soundings show robust buoyancy with MLCAPE of 2000-3000 J/kg from mid-upper 70s dewpoints and warm temperatures. Poor mid-level lapse rates limit hail, but 20-30 kt effective shear should organize storms into lines and clusters. High PWATs and downdraft water loading point to damaging wind gusts of 55-70 mph as the main hazard, focused in north-central Alabama spreading into northwest Georgia and southeast Tennessee.

Tornado potential exists too, with SPC noting most probable peak intensity up to 90 mph. CAM guidance supports bands of activity, raising the odds for a Watch issuance to 40%.

Areas at risk include northern and central Alabama (Birmingham, Huntsville) into northwest Georgia (Rome, northwest Atlanta metro). Storms should peak 2-4 PM to 6-8 PM CDT.
