ND MCS Targets Western Minnesota with 80 MPH Gusts, Watch Odds at 60% — SevereWX
An organized mesoscale convective system (MCS) in southeastern North Dakota is marching southeastward, eyeing far western Minnesota for damaging impacts into the late evening hours.
The Storm Prediction Center highlights this cold-pool-driven cluster of storms, currently under Severe Thunderstorm Watch 512, as the primary concern. Peak wind gusts of 65-80 mph pose the biggest risk, capable of snapping tree limbs, downing power lines, and causing widespread wind damage. A couple of tornadoes or severe hail up to 1.75 inches could also mix in, though gusts lead the threats.
Favorable conditions ahead include over 2000 J/kg of MLCAPE and 40-50 knots of shear aligned perpendicular to the MCS's leading edge. However, some convective inhibition (MLCINH) downstream into Minnesota introduces uncertainty about persistence. If the MCS holds together, SPC pegs a 60% chance of a new watch to cover the progression.
Far northeastern South Dakota sits in the crosshairs too, as the system clips portions of the region. Storms could intensify briefly before pushing east.
