Clusters of thunderstorms lingering over northwest to west-central Ohio this morning are set to explode by early to mid-afternoon, driven by a key belt of 30-40 knot westerly winds in the 1-5 km layer per the latest IND VWP data.
Downstream from the action, a corridor of thinner clouds is paving the way for aggressive daytime heating. With boundary-layer dewpoints in the low to mid-70s F, convective inhibition will erode fast, spiking MLCAPE to 1500-2500+ J/kg. This destabilization will sharpen the ongoing storms from central and eastern Ohio into western Pennsylvania and northwest West Virginia.
Damaging wind gusts of 55-70 mph are the headline hazard, supported by cold pool organization under that veered shear. Low-level winds may veer enough to limit bigger low-level shear, keeping tornado risk low—though a quick spin-up can't be ruled out, with peak potential near 90 mph.
